Zoar Street – victory for residents

Page updated as developer pulls out

A planning application for flats on Zoar Street in Morley was deferred at yesterday’s Plans Panel meeting to allow the developer an opportunity to reduce the numbers and layout of the residential scheme. The Plans Panel also confirmed that a refusal to reduce the housing units would automatically lead to planning permission being refused because of the over intensity of the proposal.

Cllr Judith Elliott, who attended the meeting said “This is a tribute to local residents who have organised themselves to prevent Zoar Street becoming overwhelmed with another application for one and two bedroomed flats.”

A Zoar Street resident told the Panel about the impact the flats would have on the street scene as well as highways safety issues and parking problems.

Cllr Elliott said, “There is now a four week period where the developer can come forward with proposals which are more sympathetic to the area and also reduces the intensity of the development. I would like to see more sustainable family homes and a reduction is the number of units to allow for off street parking. I hope we will be able to negotiate an application which is acceptable to local residents.”

Zoar Street Housing Plan – Developer pulls out

Campaigners were celebrating the news that the Developer who had proposed a block of flats for a garage site on Zoar Street has withdrawn from developing the location. The proposal which was opposed by many Zoar Street residents, could have seen a block of 8 flats adjacent to houses on Zoar Street.

Cllr Judith Elliott, who made representations to the Plans Panel against the application said, “I am pleased we have been able to join with local residents in successfully opposing this application. The proposal would have overdeveloped the area and would have had a significant impact on highways and parking problems.”

Local residents lodged a large number of objections and a local resident spoke directly to Councilors on the Plans Panel to voice the strength of opposition to the development on the street.

Cllr Terry Grayshon said, “We will continue to work with local residents opposing any inappropriate development on Zoar Street.”
