SCATCHERD PARK WAR MEMORIAL

The War memorial in Scatcherd Park, Councillor Terry Grayshon has campaigned for its restoration

The restoration of Scatcherd Park Grade II listed War Memorial is nearer becoming reality after a long campaign by Morley Borough Independent Councillor Terry Grayshon.

Councillor Terry Grayshon has spent the last two years securing funding for the restoration of the War Memorial, which is a sculpture of a woman in Roman dress depicting Britannia.  At either side of the monument are 12 memorial plaques.  The Memorial is situated in the heart of Scatcherd Park and was designed by Walter Gilbert at a cost of £2,500.  It was unveiled in 1927 by Alderman Joseph Kirk and accepted by Mayor Alderman Thomas Marshall on behalf of the people of Morley.

A survey of the War Memorial identified it was in need of prompt repair and restoration after suffering from the effects of decay.

Councillor Terry Grayshon said, “The Memorial is a significant historical monument.  What this monument symbolises and represents is as relevant today as when it was first constructed.  Every year thousands of Morley residents turn out for Remembrance Sunday in Scatcherd Park which shows how important it is to preserve this monument for this and future generations”.
